Does your dishwasher save or waste your time?

The dishwasher was invented to save you time and make it easier for you to clean your dishes.  It really should be quite simple actually.  Just load the dishwasher, add some detergent and run a cycle.  But for as long as dishwashers have been around there has been a problem with dishes coming out spotty, cloudy or covered in a white film.  Many people think they need a rinse agent or even a new dishwasher to solve this problem.  The real problem is actually the water that is going into the dishwasher.  Almost 90% of the country has some degree of hard water and when that water is heated up in the dishwasher it dries with a white, chalky residue.

Since the recent ban on phosphates in our detergent the hard water problem has gotten even worse.  Although the ban on phosphates is good for the environment it is not good for the look of your dishes. It helped clear up some of the hard water residue and now that it is banned dishes will look cloudier than ever.

So if you have to hand wash all your dishes after you take them out of the dishwasher you are simply just wasting time.

Possible Solutions:

Rinse agents help when dealing with water spots when drying but cannot clear up hard water residue.

You can rinse your dishwasher with vinegar but that will only help clean the inside and not prevent the problem in the future.

The Dishwasher Filtration System from Difi at www.dishwasherfilter.com is the perfect solution.  It filters the hard minerals out of your water before they even enter your dishwasher.  Even with the ban on phosphates your dishes with this system will come out spotless every time.

  1. You are right about the phosphates. We noticed how significantly more cloudy the glasswear was getting soon after the phosphates were eliminated from the detergent we were using.  When we saw the cloudiness, we had a hunch it was the water, and went looking for a dishwasher-specific filter. The dishwasherfilter.com filter sure did the trick.  We were concerned enough that we considered a new dishwasher had the filter failed.  That's when a family member mentioned the end of phosphates in the detergent. With the new filter, the dishwasher is washing even better than when the washer was new!

We've cut back on detergent in the cups, and figure we are probably saving more than the cost of the filter replacements in detergent savings. Not bad. Good as new glass wear, same old dishwasher, and no real money out.

  2. I wish I could report similar results. We've had the same cloudy situation and installed the dishwasher.com filter, but unfortunately it did not seem to have much of an effect. We apparently have very hard water here in southern California which may be too much for it...

  3. Hi Jim,

Even with very hard water the filter should work and you should see a great improvement. Besides the hard water there could be other problems to check. One could be the heating element in your dishwasher. Did you have replacements? It is possible the cartridge may have channeled some how but that is rare.

  4. We saw a little improvement with the Difi system last year but now that the phosphates have been removed we don't see much good coming from our Difi system and we have been replacing the filters every 2-3 months.

  5. anna12 is correct,We purchased a new Maytag and the dishes were Very Cloudy. I then purchased and installed the "dishwasherfilter.com" filter and there was No Change ?? Then the new dishwasher quit working with an "error" code, the tech. came out and said the heating element was deffective, he replaced it and WOW--the dishes look better than new !!
